The introduction of Internet of Things technologies is driving multiple transformations to the infrastructure used in commercial buildings for lighting, sensing, automation and control. This overview first highlights the main drivers for new IoT equipment deployment which include improvements in sustainability, efficiency and scalability. It is shown how additional value is created for all participants to commercial building ecosystems: owners and tenants, facility managers, equipment manufacturers, installers and maintainers. The overview then provides a high level description of network edge IoT architectures which become prevalent for next generation equipment to address challenges such as: resilience in mission-critical scenarios or maintaining data security and user privacy. We also describe the activity and results of several consortia and partnerships where NXP collaborates with other industry leading partners to accelerate convergence of multi-vendor interoperability of open standards used in the domains of commercial building lighting and control infrastructure.
