A locomotive generates over 4TB of useful data per day. In order to handle this large amount of data, an architecture that supports embedded security, safety architectures, and communications is essential to operational efficiency. A convergence of IT and OT on the locomotive, creating a mobile data center, creates a network that enables the architecture to meet the needs of the customer. The session will explore a real mobile data center architecture, how safety and security are implemented, and how industrial IoT data onboard can be turned into meaningful metadata to be sent offboard for further value and improvement. Safety is an important concern in transportation systems but cannot be designed separately. We will discuss IoT architectures that address both safety and efficiency in the context of transportation applications.
